Sunnyside High athletes honored at awards ceremony

Sunnyside High School honored its fall student athletes yesterday (Tuesday) at an awards ceremony that recognized sportsmanship, athletics and academics.

The football winners included Steven Monterrey for most improved and Adam Peters for most inspirational. The team's MVP awards went to Andrew Daley for offense and Isidro Ramirez for defense. Ryan Hernandez was named team captain.

Jocelyn Yanez and Juan Reynoso were recognized as Sunnyside High School's most valuable cross country runners, while Freddie Roman was named most improved. Their teammates Nathan Gonzalez, Omar Cantu and Maria Olivera were recognized as most inspirational.

In soccer, Ana Lugo won most improved honors while Analisa Van Oostrum was recognized as most inspirational and defensive MVP. The offensive MVP went to Ruby Herrera, while Perla Ponce was recognized with the coaches award.

Rally squad members Delia Serna and Nidia Hernandez were awarded most improved and most inspirational honors, respectively. Mercedes Cantu was awarded the coaches award and Sydney Wutzke was named team captain and the MVP.

Volleyball player Jill Spini was named team captain while her teammate, Jessie Robert, was awarded MVP honors. Kendall Platsman received the most improved award, while Melissa Amaro received the heart and hustle award and the coaches award.

Swim team award winners included Toni Castillo, who received the coaches award, and Katie Hutchins, who earned most inspirational honors.

All-league awards in cross country went to Juan Reynoso, first team; Jocelyn Yanez and Nathan Gonzalez, second team; and Omar Cantu was given an honorable mention.

Soccer all-league honorable mention honors went to defender Ana Lugo and midfielders Ruby Herrera and Analisa Van Oostrum.

Swim all-league second team honors went to Toni Castillo, and Marissa Broersma received an honorable mention.

Football all-league awards included Adam Peters first team for both offensive and defensive line, and Steven Monterrey as first team running back. Andrew Daley received honorable mention honors as quarterback, Rafael Salmeron received honorable mention defensive back honors and Adrian Ramirez received honorable mention as punter.

The academic awards included 113 students from the 216 participants who achieved a 3.0 grade point average or better.
