With the first heavy snowfall of the season hitting the Lower Yakima Valley last night, the timing couldn't have been much better for the opening of Sunnyside's two homeless shelters.
The women's and children's homeless shelter at Sunnyside's Free Methodist Church officially was opened last night (Monday).
Sunnyside's homeless shelter for men will open its doors at the First Christian Church tomorrow (Wednesday).
Those seeking lodging at one of the two shelters must sign in between 6 and 6:45 p.m. Besides having a roof over their heads and a warm place to sleep, the shelters are offering dinner and breakfast meals.
Each of the shelters will be closed during daylight hours. Those who use the shelters during the evening hours will be asked to leave the shelters by 6:30 a.m. each morning.
The two shelters in Sunnyside will be open during the evening hours all seven days of the week. Keeping the shelters open during the winter months is contingent, however, on enough volunteers signing up to man the two shelters. Those interested in volunteering their time at the shelters are asked to telephone one of three numbers...837-8372, 831-3287 or 439-0424.
The men's shelter at First Christian Church is located at Eighth Street and Decatur Avenue. The women's and children's shelter at Free Methodist Church is located at 11th Street and Lincoln Avenue.
