ELLENSBURG - It was a hard fought battle on the Ellensburg High School soccer field, but Grandview's hopes of competing in the Regional competition were dashed by a Bulldog goal in the 63rd minute of last night's loser-out playoff match.
That one goal, scored by Hannah Hugo of Ellensburg, was the only goal in the match.
"Grandview didn't lose because we weren't trying," said Lady 'Hounds Coach Anne Holden.
"Grandview had two golden opportunities just before Ellensburg scored," she said.
The teams held one another scoreless through the opening half of the match. The Lady 'Hounds up to halftime had three shots on goal, and Ellensburg had four opportunities to score.
"The wet conditions and rain, I think, made the match fair...both sides were under duress," Holden said, adding she believes her team was under-estimated by the Bulldogs.
The Lady 'Hounds battled the entire match and in the final 20 minutes of the closing half, Holden said, "We camped on their half of the field...we just couldn't equalize."
She said both coaches were impressed with how well the teams played. "I was just so proud at how well we played...there's no disgrace in losing a match where it is all laid out on the field."
Grandview freshman keeper Madison Trevino played her first full varsity match, and Holden said she was pleased with the performance from the underclassman. "It was fantastic," she said.
Both teams had a total of nine shots on goal. Only the one goal scored by the Bulldogs slipped past the crossbars.
Grandview ended the season 9-8 overall.
