Miss Sunnyside candidate Amanda Villarreal enjoys supporting and helping her community.
She said she wants to be the next Miss Sunnyside so she can further her efforts to improve herself as a student, a person and a leader in the community.
"I've always been a leader," Villarreal said, stating she is always looking for opportunities to meet new people and get involved in the community she calls home.
Villarreal has a passion for science and, if chosen to serve as 2010-11 Miss Sunnyside, wants to involve the court in developing a science program for youngsters at the Sunnyside Community Center.
The Sunnyside High School junior wants to involve youngsters in science experiments and projects that will further develop their skills in the subject. She said she wants the youngsters to learn science can be fun.
Villarreal plans to visit the community center once a week, working with youngsters of varying age groups.
"I want the science projects to be age-appropriate," she said, explaining she enjoyed playing with silly putty as a youngster and wants a project geared toward 5 to 7-year-olds that helps them create their own silly putty.
Villarreal said there is seemingly a lack of enthusiasm toward science among students in Sunnyside schools. The science scores are low and she wants to inspire youngsters to develop a greater appreciation for the subject. She wants to see scores rise among Sunnyside students.
"It's my hope is that with fun projects the Miss Sunnyside court can foster a greater desire in kids to learn more about the world around them," she stated.
Villarreal also enjoys music and singing. She will at the Miss Sunnyside Pageant sing "This is Me" by Demi Lovato.
The Miss Sunnyside candidate said the song is inspiring for her. "It is about breaking out and showing the world who you really are...that's what I will be doing in the pageant," she said.
She continued, stating music is to her like sharing a piece of a person's soul. She wants those attending the pageant to see inside her heart.
Villarreal is a member of the SHS choir, she is a leadership class student, a bowling and tennis team member, participates in both drama and science club and is a member of National Honor Society. She is also a Link Crew member.
Her favorite class is science and she plans on attending Washington State University following high school. Her dream is to earn a science degree, majoring in biology. She said she will minor in either botany or journalism, since she loves plants, but also enjoys writing.
Villarreal's parents are Ediberto and Oralia (Betancourt) Villarreal. She has three younger siblings, Jamie Lee, Emily Lee and Elizabeth Amy Lee.
