Now might be the time to look at rescheduling Miss Sunnyside Pageant

Sunshine Days has become Sunshine Day and the festival's long standing presence continues to dwindle.

It has long been a struggle to get the community to rally around the September festival and now this latest harbinger as Sunshine Days becomes, well, a day.

And that's okay.

If it's time for Sunshine Days to be a day of community fun and pride centered around a car show then we should give the people what they want.

But it's also making me wonder if it's time for the Miss Sunnyside Pageant to be held at a different time of year, when there is more attention drawn to the city.

You know, a time like the Lighted Farm Implement Parade on the first Saturday of each December. That event has become Sunnyside's signature activity and draws huge crowds, as well as regional and national attention.

What better time than that weekend to crown our Miss Sunnyside and her court?

Maybe the pageant could be held the night before the Lighted Farm Implement Parade.

Or maybe, better yet, on a Saturday afternoon to coincide with the parade that same day. After all, the Lighted Farm Implement Parade route goes right by the high school and that area fills with vehicles parked for parade watching.

The move would give visitors here another slice of Sunnyside to enjoy, another reason to extend their stay and it could be the tree topper for what is already a great Christmas-time celebration.

The Miss Sunnyside and her court that are selected at the pageant could begin their reign effective Jan. 1 and make it truly a calendar year title.

Or the honor could begin immediately, with the Lighted Farm Implement Parade serving as the new court's debut and/or the outgoing court's fond farewell.

I realize this would take some planning to pull off a switch and it probably couldn't be done this year since the new court is set to be crowned here in a week or so.

At any rate, it's something to think about for the future, perhaps for the Miss Sunnyside Court selected next year.

If the goal is to put the best image forward for Sunnyside and its court, the Lighted Farm Implement Parade would seem to be the best way to accomplish both.

At the same time, it would give Sunshine Day the freedom to evolve as needed so it meets the needs of what appears to be a changing era.
