The accident, which claimed the life of Elizabeth F. Miller, occurred at about 7 p.m. Monday evening at the East Edison and Bethany roads intersection, just east of Sunnyside.

Another 76-year-old Sunnyside woman, Helena M. Webb, suffered serious injuries in the crash. A passenger in Miller's car, she was initially taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital, then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The driver of the 2005 Kenworth semi-tractor that struck the sedan the two women were in avoided injuries. He is 34-year-old Armenio H. Gutierrez of Sunnyside.

Washington State Patrol troopers report that Miller was behind the wheel of a 2001 Chrysler Sebring four-door sedan that was eastbound on East Edison Road. The WSP said Miller failed to stop at the stop sign at the Bethany Road intersection.

Miller's car was then struck by the semi-truck, which was southbound on Bethany Road. The collision sent the sedan careening off the roadway up over a 20-foot embankment, before it came to rest in an irrigation canal.

The Chrysler Sebring was totaled. The Kenworth semi-truck sustained approximately $2,000 in damages. The tractor-trailer rig was able to be driven from the scene.
