Through town halls, phone calls, meetings, letters and internet tools like America Speaking Out, I have been engaged in a listening tour with Central Washington residents. My Republican colleagues have been doing the same in communities they represent in an unprecedented effort to gain insight and input from the American people.
Last week, House Republicans unveiled A Pledge to America, a new governing agenda built by listening to the American people that offers concrete solutions to the issues that are most important to our nation. This new standard of governing is focused on creating jobs, growing our economy, cutting spending, securing our nation and reforming Congress.
For the past four years those who run Congress have ignored the concerns of everyday Americans, instead choosing to pass bailouts, stimulus spending, new energy taxes and a government takeover of health care.
Simply put, those who have total control of Washington D.C. refuse to listen to the American people, and that needs to change.
With too many Americans still struggling to make ends meet, the Pledge offers immediate ideas to help create jobs and end the economic uncertainty that is slowing economic growth and job creation. The Pledge also offers real solutions to reduce the debt, shrink the size of government, end the out-of-control spending and return to the fiscal responsibility that economic experts say is required in order to revive our economy.
This agenda recognizes that the first priority of the federal government is to protect American families and communities from the security threats facing our nation. It calls for the repeal of President Obama's health care law. And, calls for reforms to the way Washington D.C. operates to increase openness, fairness and transparency for the American people.
This new way forward puts people first, with a specific plan to help our friends and neighbors go back to work, grow the economy and stop the runaway government spending. And, above all, the Pledge is about carrying out the will of the people with bold solutions that can be implemented today.
With a quarter of the year left for Congress to act, the time to act is now. Please visit my website at www.hastings.house.gov to read A Pledge to America and share your thoughts.
