In preparation for the 2011-12 school year, Sun Valley Elementary School in Sunnyside will be hosting two registration periods for parents to choose from.
The first enrollment opportunity will be Wednesday, April 13, and Thursday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. on both days.
These April enrollment dates are ideal for parents who work during the day, said Sun Valley Elementary School Principal Heidi Hellner-Gomez.
Early registration for kindergarten students is important for the school administration in planning the next school year. It will determine how many teachers will be needed, as well as desks and other supplies.
"Last year we had to open three classes after school started because we had so many more kids than we thought we would," Hellner-Gomez said.
The school, she said, had 80 more children than they anticipated.
Parents who cannot make the April registration date can also register in May. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 9, and Tuesday, May 10, parents can also register their kindergartner.
Children must be five-year-old before Aug. 31 to register. Parents are asked to bring their child's birth certificate, immunization record and proof of address, such as a utility bill, bank statement or medical coupons.
Sun Valley Elementary School is a unique kindergarten-only school. It is only one of three in the state.
Hellner-Gomez says this atmosphere "makes a very comfortable environment for them (the students) and provides a place where they can all learn together."
An all kindergarten school is less intimidating for the student, she says, and also gives the entire staff the opportunity to focus on one curriculum and to work together for the same goals.
"It's their first introduction to the alphabet, numbers, colors and shapes," Hellner-Gomez said. "It's always good to introduce students before they get to school, but we work with students at all levels."
Sun Valley Elementary School is located at 1220 North 16th Street in Sunnyside.
