What would have been a good April Fool's joke was not. We took delivery of four 700-lb. steers for our pasture. They arrived at 11 a.m. and by 11:02 a.m. they had escaped our pasture and were all running through our neighbor's vineyard. I would have liked to have called Rick and said "the cattle are loose", let him panic for awhile and then said "April Fools"...but it was true.
They ultimately ran all the way to Washout Road, 1.5 miles, turned and headed back west again, split up with two going north across Independence Road. For a time our efforts to retrieve them seemed futile and uncertain.
We would like to extend our thanks to those we know and those whose names we never got for all the help in this unintended rodeo.
Thanks to John Topp for sending Ernie with the trailer, three skilled cowhands on horses with their two cow dogs; to Conrad Kinsey, his trailer and his friend Rob; to Rick Haak and his guys; to Jeff Kinsey and his guys; to Todd Wheeler and his guys; to Martin Perez; and to our man Mario Flores and anyone else we forgot. We appreciate all your help.
We hope we would be as willing to stop what we were doing and help a neighbor in need as you were.
