City inks interlocal agreements

The Sunnyside City Council Monday agreed to two interlocal agreements, one with the regional stormwater policy group and the other with the city of Mabton.

The interlocal agreement with the regional stormwater policy group extends an agreement already in place. The purpose of the agreement is to provide the cities of Sunnyside, Yakima and Union Gap, and Yakima County the ability to work together during the stormwater permit process.

Sunnyside Public Works Director Jim Bridges told council the Washington State Department of Ecology is currently behind in the current stormwater permit process.

"This agreement is an amendment extending the cycle to the next permit," he said.

The council unanimously approved the agreement amendment.

The agreement with the city of Mabton is for use of the Sunnyside jail.

Corrections Sgt. Andrew Gutierrez told council the city of Mabton does not have its own jail.

The city of Sunnyside has provided Mabton with a facility to house its inmates.

Because the interlocal jail agreement is like others the council has read at past meetings, further discussion did not take place.

The interlocal jail agreement expires Dec. 31, 2013 and the city of Mabton will pay a daily fee of $46.77 in 2011 for use of Sunnyside's facilities. Next year, the contract stipulates the city of Sunnyside will be paid $49.10 daily for use of its jail and in 2013 Mabton will pay Sunnyside $51.55 per day.

The Sunnyside City Council also unanimously approved the interlocal jail agreement with Mabton.
