Bardell receives Legion scholarship

Sunnyside High School senior Joyanna Bardell was awarded the American Legion Auxiliary scholarship for the state of Washington.

The scholarship was received based on Bardell's application made through the American Legion Auxiliary in Grandview.

The application included Bardell's church, school and community activities, as well as her written article, "My Desire to Further My Education."

Bardell's community involvement has included serving as Miss Sunnyside. She was also a Spirit of Sunnyside youth award recipient for mentoring middle school girls and her activities with the homeless shelter, a harvest party for senior citizens and a blood drive.

Also considered in the application was Bardell's scholastic achievement, which includes maintaining an A average.

She qualified for one of six scholarships offered by the auxiliary's education committee because her family has a military veteran. A total of 32 applications were received statewide for the the scholarships.

"We are very proud to have played a part in certifying Joyanna's scholarship application for the state's review," said Betty George, president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Grandview.
