Sunnyside church prepares for restart

On Sunday, April 17, the Sunnyside Church of God will hold its final service. After 60 years, the church will officially become Oasis Community Church on Easter Sunday.

According to the church's pastor, Cameron Garcia, the new church is being started from the old.

It is a restart, he says. Oasis will have a different vision, leadership statement and ministry than the Sunnyside Church of God.

The idea to make serious changes in the church came around five years ago, Garcia said.

"The leadership team recognized that they had been doing the same thing the same way for a long time."

He says the leadership team was not originally looking to restart the church, but it soon became clear that a restart was necessary.

"In order for us to do what we feel God wants us to do, we've got to make a clean break," Garcia said. "When you've been around for 60 years as a church, it's very hard to change the direction of your momentum."

The Sunnyside Church of God at 344 N. Eleventh St. will have its final service on Sunday, April 17, at 10 a.m.

The service will be a memorial celebration for the church and people will share memories from the church's many years in Sunnyside.

Oasis Community Church will officially open her doors to worshippers on Easter Sunday, April 24, at 10 a.m.
