Soil needed at local fields

Where is the composite dirt that was to be laid on the Sunnyview Park softball fields by March 2, 2011?

Last year when the softball association planned to hold a tournament at Sunnyside's Sunnyview fields, they were forced to move to the fields in Toppenish because the Sunnyview fields were unsuitable for play.

Bob Sarmiento and I spent six months at Sunnyside Parks and Recreation meetings expressing our views regarding the application of the proper soil mixture to the fields. This is essential so that soil applied does not simply blow away.

Finally, in January, Sunnyside Assistant City Manager Byron Olson announced that $10,000 was allocated in the 2011 budget for purchase and application of the soil. Last Wednesday, we learned that the $10,000 was no longer available.

Step up to the plate softball players and call City Hall to request the funds be reinstated and the composite soil applied as soon as possible.
