MABTON - The Mabton Vikings picked up their second straight win with a 9-2 thumping of the Ki-Be Bears this past Friday.
Both teams only fielded nine players for the SCAC soccer match. Mabton Coach Junior Garcia said normally teams field 11 players but the Ki-Be team was short of teammates. Garcia said other teams had been playing 11-9 against the Bears, but he decided to make things even and hold two Mabton players out of the line-up.
The Vikings might have been able to get away with even fewer players as Tony Espinosa put on a soccer clinic by scoring five of Mabton's nine goals.
"He was having a pretty good game," Garcia said. "He had a lot of space and is pretty quick. You give him space and he can do a lot of stuff."
Espinosa scored in the third minute of play and then added two more goals in the ninth and 16th minutes. After that Garcia pulled Espinosa until the second half.
Mabton's Josh Carrasco also scored in the first half, giving the Vikings a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Espinosa started the second half and scored quickly. He got goals in the 43rd and 47th minutes of play. After scoring his fifth goal of the match Garcia pulled his star player out for the rest of the game.
Jose Cruz scored right after Espinosa left the game and that was followed by an Edgar Cisneros goal in the 49th minute. For Cruz, it was his first goal of the season.
Behind 8-0, the Bears got on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute of play when Secandino Flores converted a penalty kick. Kirkland Devers scored Ki-Be's second goal when he got an opportunity for a shot right in front of the Vikings' goal.
Dario Ochoa got his first goal of the season for Mabton in the 74th minute mark.
Mabton keeper Raul Nunez recorded four saves for the Vikings. Flores had eight saves for Ki-Be.
Mabton (4-7, 6-7) will next travel to Naches on Tuesday, April 26, to play the Rangers at 4 p.m.
