Grizzly boys fifth, girls sixth at Prosser Invite

PROSSER - The Sunnyside boys track team placed fifth with 56.5 points this past Saturday at the Prosser Invite. The fifth place finish was out of 17 teams.

The Sunnyside girls scored 51 points in Saturday's invite, good enough for a sixth place finish out of 16 teams.

The Grizzly boys were led by Eduardo Salmeron with three top five finishes. He was first in the long jump event when he recorded a leap of 20-3. He tied for second in the high jump with Connell's Kade Eppich when he cleared 5-10. The event was won by Pullman's Ben Pavish and Ellensburg's Cody Allen Russell when both posted a jump of 6-2.

Salmeron came in third place in the triple jump with a distance of 40-2.25.

Nathan Gonzalez gave the Grizzlies a third place finish in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:44.54. The event was won by Jeffrey Ott of Ellensburg with a time of 4:35.08.

Eduardo Cuevas scored a fourth place finish in the 400m event for Sunnyside. He had a time of 53.13. The event was won by Ellensburg's Sungyoung Lee with a time of 52.06.

The Grizzlies' other fourth place finish came from Miguel Guzman in the 800g javelin throw. Guzman recorded a distance of 154-5. Cameron Wager of Hanford had a throw of 187-6, good enough for first place.

Four Grizzlies placed fifth at the Prosser Invite. Juan Reynoso was fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:05.54. Eric Amaro placed fifth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.65. Jorge Ramirez was fifth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 42.98 and Ryan Rice placed fifth in the pole vault when he cleared 12 feet.

The Sunnyside girls were led by Marisa Broersma, who had three top five finishes.

She placed first in the 400m event with a time of 1:02.48 and had two fourth place finishes, as well. Broersma was fourth in the 100m with a time of 13.43. The event was won by Marlee Rees of Prosser with a time of 12.85. Broersma was also fourth in the 200m with a time of 27.63. That event was won by Tracey Bautista of Davis with a time of 27.13.

Celia Vargas gave the Lady Grizzlies a third place finish in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:41.62. That event was won by Yasamin Mohsenian of East Valley of Yakima with a time of 5:35.13.

Kendall Platsman scored a fourth place finish in the high jump for the Grizzlies when she cleared 4-10. The event was won by Hanford's Melissa Merrill when she cleared 5-2.

The Lady Grizzlies' other top five finish in individual events came from Geordan Skyles, who placed fifth in the pole vault when she cleared eight feet. The event was won by Amy Rovira of Hanford when she recorded a vault of 10 feet.

Sunnyside's Miranda Borrego, Celia Vargas, Marisa Broersma and Brittney Broersma teamed up for a second place finish in the 4x400 relay event with a time of 4:21.16. The Prosser team of Carly Estey, Brooke Adams, Kolby Childers and Madison Moore won the event with a time of 4:17.34.

The Lady Grizzlies scored another top five finish in a relay event when Vanessa Alvarez, Brittney Broersma, Ashley Montes and Borrego recorded a time of 53.76. Prosser won this event when Brenna Cherry, Childers, Becca Niemeyer and Marlee Rees combined for a time of 51.01.

The Grizzlies will compete against two CBBN teams on Thursday, April 28, when Sunnyside hosts Eastmont and Pasco.
