LYLE - It didn't come easy, but the Sunnyside Christian girls fastpitch softball team wrapped up Greater Columbia 1B League play undefeated.
The Lady Knights had to rally from behind in the first game of a twin bill at Lyle yesterday, but in earning the 3-2 comeback win, coupled with the 12-0 pasting of the Cougars in the nightcap, Sunnyside concluded conference play with a perfect 8-0 record.
Tuesday's two victories also give the Lady Knights an overall record of 14-2, and extends their current winning streak to 13 games.
Down 2-0 in yesterday's opener, Sunnyside Christian finally awoke in the top of the sixth. After a strikeout to open the frame, one of seven batters Lyle hurler Carly Roth set down on strikes, Analisa VanOostrum got the rally going by slapping a single, one of two single-base hits she had in the game. Grace den Hoed then stepped to the plate and lambasted a pitch over the right fielder's head. The ball rolled all the way to the fence, giving den Hoed an inside-the-park homer and plating two runs in the process.
Tied at 2-2, Devi Knotts kept the momentum going by ripping a double. Pitcher Makayla Morrow followed, socking a run-scoring double of her own to account for the final 3-2 score.
Morrow, who went the distance atop the pitching rubber in the opening game, yielded just one more hit to Lyle in the final two innings and recorded three of the final six outs via strikeouts.
All told for the game, Morrow gave up just two hits, didn't allow an earned run - due chiefly to the uncharacteristic five errors her teammates committed - and fanned 12 along the way. The only down side to Morrow's performance was issuing four walks.
Morrow, who pitched the first two innings of game two, combined with relief pitcher Janelle DeGroot to toss a no-hitter in the shortened, five-inning nightcap. Together they struck out three Lyle batters and walked only one in helping the Lady Knights claim the convincing 12-0 victory.
The top hitters for the winners in game two included VanOostrum, 4-for-4 with a two-run triple and three RBI total; Knotts, 2-for-2 with a first inning triple and two runs scored; Danica DeGroot, who repeated her first game performance by going 2-for-3; and den Hoed, who was 2-for-4 with a double.
Sunnyside Christian will be out of action until Tuesday, May 10, when the team travels to Walla Walla to take on the DeSales Irish. The Lady Knights have a total of four regular season games remaining, all non-league affairs.
