NACHES - It's beginning to look like Mabton High School soccer player Tony Espinosa might just be enough to give the Vikings a State soccer title if he continues to play as he has this season.
Espinosa scored four goals in last night's (Tuesday) 5-1 win against Naches Valley to bring his total to nine goals in the past two games.
"Tony has been focusing more lately," Mabton Coach Junior Garcia said. "The players have been playing better as a team. I'm very happy with their performance."
The Vikings beat the Rangers 5-1, the same score by which Mabton prevailed against Naches back on March 25.
Last night Espinosa scored in the second minute of play to give Mabton a 1-0 lead. He scored again in the sixth minute on a breakaway goal and then completed the hat trick in the 21st minute of play.
With the Vikings leading 3-0, senior Jesus Rios got involved in the action when he headed the ball past the Rangers' keeper to make it 4-0. It was Rios' first goal of the season.
Espinosa scored his fourth goal of the afternoon in the 61st minute. The Rangers got one back in the 66th minute when Andres Ayala scored.
Jeffery Barbee recorded 10 saves for the Rangers. Gerardo Barajas had six saves for Mabton.
Garcia said yesterday's win was important. The Vikings are currently sitting in fifth place and if they can get a win against either Connell or Highland, they could move up to fourth, he said.
"Our team is ready," he said. "I feel we are good enough to take out Connell and Highland."
Mabton (5-7, 7-7) will travel to Connell on Saturday, April 30, to play the Eagles at 11 a.m.
