Both the Sunnyside boys and girls track teams scored victories over visiting Pasco yesterday (Thursday) in a 3A CBBN track meet, but both Grizzly teams ended up losing to Eastmont.
The SHS boys beat the Bulldogs 104-40 and were edged by the Wildcats by a score of 77-67.
Jorge Ramirez led the Grizzly boys with a first place finish and two second place efforts. He won the 100m with a time of 11.72 seconds. Ramirez's teammate, Ryan White, placed third in the event with a time of 12.10.
Ramirez finished second in the 200m with a time of 23.82. He was just edged out by Eastmont's Brandon Hancock, who clocked a time of 23.57.
Ramirez's other second place finish came in the 300m hurdles. His time of 42.58 was only beat by Pasco's Brandon Search's time of 41.86.
Eduardo Salmeron earned the Grizzlies a first place finish in the triple jump. His distance of 40-03 beat teammate Sergio Lugo, who jumped a distance of 39-6. Sunnyside's Rafeal Salmeron made it a Grizzly sweep when he took third in the event with a distance of 38 feet.
Eduardo Salmeron also placed second in the high jump when he cleared 5-8. This event was won by Pasco's Search when he cleared 5-10. Salmeron placed third in the long jump with a distance of 19-10. Search won this event, as well, with a jump of 21-1.5.
Sunnyside's Juan Reynoso scored a victory and earned a second place finish. He won the 1600m with a time of 4:47.62. His teammate, Nathan Gonzalez, finished second with a time of 4:48.56. Reynoso placed second in the 800m with a time of 2:11.38. He was beat by Pasco's Presley Powell, who clocked a time of 2:10.04.
Gonzalez also scored another second place finish in the 3200m event. His time of 10:27.36 was only beat by Dylan Guilmete of Eastmont, who ran the event in 10:23.16.
Eric Amaro was the last Grizzly to notch multiple placings at yesterday's event. He placed first in the 800g javelin event with a distance of 167-7. His teammate, Miguel Guzman, scored a second place finish in the event with a throw of 156-11.
Amaro was third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 18.13. The event was won by Cam Doneen of Eastmont in 16.77.
Audiel Sanchez gave the Grizzlies a second place finish in the 400m event when he clocked 56.28. Sunnyside's Ruben Roman placed third in the event with a time of 57.31. The event was won by Eastmont's Mitch Meyers in 54.33 seconds.
Earning third place finishes for Sunnyside were Ryan Rice (pole vault) and Andres Garcia (12-lb. shot put).
Sunnyside also scored two second place finishes in relay events. The team of Roman, Lugo, Sanchez and White took runner-up honors in the 4x100 relay. The team of Ramirez, Roman, Lugo and Sanchez were second in the 4x400 relay.
The Sunnyside girls beat Pasco by a score of 106-24, but lost to Eastmont 99-50.
The Lady Grizzlies were led by Marisa Broersma, who had three wins in yesterday's track meet. She won the 100m with a time of 13.71. Fellow Grizzly Miranda Borrego placed third in that event with a time of 14.13.
Broersma was also first in the 200m with a time of 28.65. Teammate Vanessa Alvarez placed third in the event with a time of 29.48.
Broersma also won the 400m event with a time of 1:04.20.
"Marisa was very solid," SHS Coach Darren Mezger said. "Her times weren't great because the weather conditions were terrible, but she performed well."
Her sister, Brittney Broersma, scored a win in the 300m hurdles. She had a time of 54.03.
Mellissa Amaro won the 600g javelin toss with a distance of 97-6. Mezger said her distance was a personal record for her.
Sunnyside's Kendall Platsman won the high jump when she cleared 4-10.
"She had been stuck on 4-8 for a while, but now she is consistently hitting 4-10," Mezger said. "We're looking at getting to 5 feet next week."
Celia Vargas gave the Lady Grizzlies a second place finish in the 1600m event with a time of 5:47.15. This event was won by Eastmont's Kayla Gelb, who clocked a time of 5:46.91.
Sunnyside's Ayla Schmick was second in the long jump with a distance of 14-3. Teammate Alvarez was third with a distance of 13-10.5. The event was won by Kendra Scott of Eastmont with a distance of 15-5.
Schmick was also third in the triple jump with a distance of 29-2.The event was won by Niki Seyster of Eastmont when she recorded a jump of 30-1.
Sunnyside's Geordan Skyles was the last Grizzly to score a top three placing in an individual event. She cleared 8 feet in the pole vault, which put her in a tie for first with Eastmont's Marina Heminger and Ashley Wright, who both cleared 8 feet, as well.
The girls team of Amaro, Rica Parramore, Ashley Oswalt and Nereyda Barajas placed first in the 4x200 relay. The team of Marisa Broersma, Brittney Broersma, Laura Carrillo and Borrego was second in the 4x400 relay. In the 4x100 relay, Alvarez, Brittney Broersma, Borrego and Ashley Montes placed second.
The Sunnyside boys are now 3-2 in league play, the girls are 1-4. Both teams will compete at the Jewett Invite in Ellensburg on Saturday, April 30.
