Katie Johnson, 92, of Sunnyside went to be with her loving Savior at sunrise and into the arms of her loving husband Marvin, on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011.

Katie was born March 22, 1919 in Sunnyside to Jacob and Amelia (Lorentz) Martin.

She received her education in Sunnyside at Wendall Phillips School.

On June 24, 1937 she married Marvin W. Johnson. The couple continued to make their home in the Lower Valley, where Katie was a lifetime homemaker.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing, canning fruits and vegetables.

Katie had a love for baseball and was an avid Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners fan. She also loved dancing and music, especially watching Lawrence Welk.

She was a member of the Sunnyside Grace Brethren Church, Women's Missionary Council, the 2:15 Sunday school class, lifetime member of the Waneta Grange and the Ladies Waneta Neighborhood Club.

Katie is survived by her children, Donna (Mark) Painter of Kelso, Sharon Melvold of Sacramento, Calif., Debbi (Mike) Berk and Renee (Tom) Rodriguez, all of Sunnyside and Randy (Karen) Johnson of Longview; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren with another on the way; three sisters, Helen Price, Alice Prescott and Betty Booher; and many nieces and nephews.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents, Amelia and Jacob Martin; her husband, Marvin Johnson; sisters, Molly Kleingartner and Elsie Mattingley; brother, Robert Martin and infant brother, Jacob Martin; granddaughter, Penny Rae Prescott; and great-grandson, Audré James Hursh.

Viewing and visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. A private family interment will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, with a memorial service celebrating Katie's life to follow at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sunnyside.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Katie's name be made to Lower Valley Hospice or the Sun Terrace Assisted Living Center Activities Department.
