We have three candidates running for one of the Sunnyside School Board positions. I would like to explain why Dr. Mike Wedam is the best candidate.
First of all, Mike and his wife Sue are active members of our community. They have raised and put two daughters through the Sunnyside schools. Both their daughters are attending WSU and doing well there.
Mike is a well rounded businessman and his bovine veterinarian service serves the dairy industry in the Yakima Valley. Because he is engaged in business in Sunnyside, he understands the needs business has for a well trained and educated workforce. It is critical to our area's economic growth for the school board and administration to understand and have an insight into the business community so that our children can graduate and contribute their skills to keep our valley prosperous.
There are a multitude of studies showing that America is falling behind the rest of the world in educated, well trained people. Viable industries are going global to produce products and services because the U.S. has become unfriendly to industry.
Mike and Sue both teach college classes and understand the level of academic training students need to be successful in university courses. I have talked with students who have graduated from SHS in the top 5 percent of their class and they have told me that they are barely able to compete with students who come from schools on the west side of the mountains in universities in our state.
The other candidates come with a great deal of experience and have been very involved in the educational system. But, because of Mike's objectivity, he has a unique and critical perspective which the other candidates lack. He will bring fresh vision and insight if elected to the board.
