Park fee waivers OK'd

The Sunnyside City Council Monday approved a revision of the ordinance for parks and recreational fees and charges.

The ordinance didn't allow waivers for fees associated with the use of parks or facilities, but the revision will allow waivers to be granted to non-profits and governmental agencies for events that benefit the community.

Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer Byron Olson said the city had to pay itself when using the parks and the community center.

With the changes to the ordinance, the Sunnyside Parks and Recreation Commission can approve a waiver and forward its recommendation to the council.

The council can then elect to waive fees for events like the health fair planned by Transformation Sunnyside Yakima Valley on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Council approved the ordinance revision by a unanimous 6-0 vote.
