After what has been a long three months of waiting, four Sunnyside police officers placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting of Jose Carlos Campuzano of Grandview on April 30 have been cleared for duty.
Sunnyside Deputy Police Chief Phil Schenck said he had a conversation with Yakima County Prosecutor Jim Hagarty a couple of days ago.
"He told me he found the officers cleared from wrongdoing," said Schenck.
An official letter from the prosecutor is pending and Schenck said he will issue a press release at that time.
Meanwhile Schenck is pleased with the outcome.
"Our officers did nothing wrong...they did what they were trained to do," he said.
Schenck said his department is pleased no officers were injured during the shootout that happened in the 500 block of South Sixth Street when Campuzano opened fire on police.
"In a similar situation in the future I would expect them (the officers) to respond in a like manner," said Schenck.
The investigation into the shooting was conducted by the Washington State Patrol.
