Sunnyside High School golf coach and educator Keith Crimp earlier this week came up three strokes shy of qualifying to play in the 57th annual USGA Senior Amateur, which will be held Sept. 10-15 at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
Competing at a sectional qualifying contest on Tuesday of this week at the Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore., Crimp posted a 5-over-par 77. That left him in a tie for seventh-place honors from the 21-player field.
Unfortunately for Crimp, only the top two finishers at the sectional qualifier get to move on to the national championship tournament.
Tuesday's sectional winner proved to be Pat O'Donnell of Happy Valley, Ore. He carded a 3-under-par 69 (35-34) on the 6,717-yard layout at Creekside. The No. 2 sectional qualifier moving on to the national tourney is Bob Harrington of Portland, Ore. He shot a round of 2-over-par 74 (35-39), which tied him with Portland's Randall Mahar. Harrington defeated Mahar in a playoff for the No. 2 berth to nationals.
