Marijuana growing operation found at Washout Road farm near Sunnyside

A helicopter flies overhead as federal and county drug agents comb a nearby cornfield on Washout Road for marijuana plants.

A helicopter hovered overhead as the LEAD Task Force, as well as Drug Enforcement Agency agents scoured a corn field yesterday just north of Sunnyside, after spotting a marijuana growing operation.

The operation on Washout Road was one of many that took place in Yakima County, according to Sgt. Al Escalera of the LEAD Task Force.

He said federal agents with the assistance of his agents are daily finding marijuana grows throughout the county and eradicating them.

"We are in the middle of the marijuana eradication season," said Escalera.

He said the exact number of plants removed from the corn field was not known as of press time.

When providing counts, however, Escalera said the numbers to be released will be the total sum of plants eradicated throughout the entire county.
