Grandview church to host vacation Bible school

GRANDVIEW - Area students will have the chance to visit life as it was when Jesus walked the earth.

Bethany Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Birch Street in Grandview, will be hosting its annual vacation Bible school, Aug. 20-21.

This year, different from the previous year's week-long event, the summer school experience will be a two-day program. Additionally nearly 25 volunteers are scheduled to help with the program duties.

The theme, "Hometown Nazareth, Where Jesus was a Kid," will focus on allowing the children to get a small taste of what it was like to live in the times Jesus did. The church is expecting 50 to 80 participants this year.

Activities will begin Saturday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m., with a time of celebration and songs. Children ages three to students entering the fifth grade, are eligible to attend. The event is free and open to all.

Various activities are scheduled throughout the day, including crafts, games, a synagogue school lesson and songs. A visit with Mary the mother of Jesus is also scheduled. Students will break for a hot dog lunch between the morning and afternoon sessions. The day's activities will conclude at 4 p.m.

To follow the theme, snacks will consist of fruits, nuts and breads. The students will be allowed to choose snacks and crafts in an environment similar to an open market. They will be given coins and will be allowed to purchase their choices.

Students will re-enter Nazareth Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The day will begin with a service or mission project, followed by celebration, music and a visit to Mary's house. Morning activities will conclude with a church-wide potluck hosted by the worship committee and session members. All activities on Sunday will be held inside the Fellowship Hall. For more information residents can call the church at (509) 882-3576.
