Grandview man dies after being shot in head

GRANDVIEW - At approximately 8 p.m. this past Saturday, Grandview police said an 18-year-old male, identified as Mariano Cuevas, was struck by a gunshot to the head that resulted in his death.

The incident occurred near Smith Elementary School in the 600 block of East Second Street.

Witnesses told police a male suspect was seen fleeing the scene on foot, and Grandview requested assistance from the Sunnyside K-9 officer in search of the suspect.

At the time of the incident Grandview High School's drama program was being staged at the elementary school.

Grandview School Superintendent Kevin Chase said the facility was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

"No problems were encountered and the play continued as normal," said Chase.

For police, the search for the shooting suspect was not successful, although officers from Prosser, Mabton, Sunnyside and the Benton County Sheriff's office assisted.

The gunshot victim was provided medical aid and transported to Prosser Memorial Hospital.

The victim died as a result of his injury Sunday.

Grandview police urge anyone with information regarding the incident to call 882-2000.
