YAKIMA - Led by individual champions in two weight classes, the Mabton Viking wrestling team tallied 80 team points to finish in seventh place during the Mel Carlson Invitational held this past Saturday at West Valley High School.
Top team honors went to Toppenish with a score of 172 points.
Mabton's champions were Vicente Mireles (126 lbs.) and Fabian Ruiz (152 lbs.). Mireles earned top honors by outpointing Marcus Hartman of Camas 6-2 in the finals, while Ruiz won his weight class by whipping Pasco's Phoenix Virgen 11-2 in the championship bout.
The Vikings had four wrestlers advance to the third/fourth place consolation finals.
Brandon Marquez earned third place honors for Mabton in the 160-lb. consolation final, earning a 7-0 shutout over Ephrata's Bryce Unruh. Finishing in fourth place for the Vikes was Marlen Chavez, the only girl to place for Mabton, who ended the day with a 5-2 loss to West Valley's Juvenal Farias in the 106-lb. consolation final.
Rounding out Mabton's placers at the invite were fourth place finishers Eric Huesca (285 lbs.) and Gabriel Martinez (220 lbs.), who were pinned in their respective consolation finals.
Coach John Kilian was pleased to see so many of his wrestlers place at the West Valley invite.
"The kids did well, there were a lot more positives than negatives," he said.
The Vikes this coming Thursday will travel to Royal City for a non-league double dual match against the Knights and Connell.
