Israel Manzo became just the fourth boys basketball player in Sunnyside High School history to top the 1,000 point career mark during the win at Moses Lake this past Friday.
The senior sharpshooter now stands at 1,030 career points. The only other Grizzlies to reach that plateau, according to Assistant Coach Ruben Fernandez, are Brad Ness, who reached 1,025 career points in 1977; Jeff Thompson (1,145 in 1988); and all-time leader Lynn Dasso (1,609 in 1974).
"It's real exciting, Israel's worked real hard," said Fernandez.
He noted after the game at Moses Lake the school there gave Manzo the game ball in honor of his career mark.
"The first thing he said after receiving the ball is that he couldn't have done this without his teammates," said Fernandez. "It's a big thing for our program, for him to get that milestone."
Fernandez said the SHS athletic department will have a celebration of Manzo's 1,000-point mark before this Saturday's home basketball game. "We're just so proud of him," he said.
