Long-time Sunnyside resident dies in auto crash

A mainstay of the Sunnyside community, 89-year-old Elmer C. Schilperoort died yesterday afternoon as the result of a two-vehicle collision.

The Monday, Dec. 12, accident occurred at the intersection of Edison Avenue and SR-241, at about 1:30 p.m.

Washington State Patrol troopers indicate that Schilperoort was at fault in the mishap that ultimately claimed his life. According to the WSP, Schilperoort was westbound on Edison, driving a 1999 Mercury Marquis. Troopers say he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection. His four-door sedan collided with a 2005 Jeep Cherokee that was northbound on SR-241, driven by 28-year-old Gerardo Martinez-Tafoya of Sunnyside.

The younger man avoided serious injury. His vehicle sustained approximately $2,000 worth of damages.

Schilperoort's car was totaled.

The long-time Sunnyside resident was rushed to Sunnyside Community Hospital by ambulance. Troopers said he died at the medical facility.
