Fire causes $50,000
in damages to Sunnyside-area home
Firefighters from Yakima County Fire District #5 responded to a residential structure fire last night.
Firefighters arrived at the 1400 block of Cemetery Road near Sunnyside yesterday at approximately 11 p.m.
Officials reported three minor children were first to notice the fire and they notified an adult. Occupants of the home attempted to extinguish the fire but after failed attempts the family evacuated the home.
Firemen arrived to the multi-family home and found the rear add-on section of the home full of smoke with flame involvement that extended into the main structure. Firefighters attempted to extinguish the fire from the exterior until additional personnel arrived. They attacked the fire from the interior of the structure at that point. All 24 firemen who responded to the incident cleared the scene in less than three hours from when the call came in.
Officials say the home has moderate to severe structure damage, estimating the loss at nearly $50,000.
In addition, firemen said there didn't appear to be any working smoke detectors in the add-on or in the main residential structure at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, according to firefighters.
The Red Cross was called to help assist the families living in the home with clothing, housing and food.
