OTHELLO - In what proved to be an all-day marathon, the Mabton Viking wrestling team had five wrestlers place during an invite in Othello yesterday, Wednesday.
No team scores were kept.
Mabton Coach John Kilian said the event for his squad started at 10 a.m. and didn't end until 9 p.m. "They had a lot of wrestlers there," he said. "It was crazy."
Even so, it proved good experience for Mabton's varsity wrestling squad, which squared off against JV teams from larger schools.
Emilio Mireles of Mabton captured first-place honors in the 160-lb. weight class with a 7-1 victory in the championship finals over Pasco's Anthony Burrows.
The other Mabton champion last night was in girls competition, where Mary Gutierrez (118 lbs.) outpointed Pasco's Sidney Virgen 13-2 to win the championship match.
Garnering second-place honors for the Vikes were Emiliano Rodriguez (113 lbs.) and Eric Huesca (220 lbs.).
Rodriguez was defeated in the championship match of his weight class by Connell's Fernando Gomez. Rodriguez trailed 4-1 in the first round. The Mabton grappler rallied, but fell short in a 6-4 loss.
Huesca rallied to tie the 220-lb. championship match, but lost in overtime, 4-1 to Wenatchee's Aaron Hus. Kilian said Huesca trailed 1-0 in the third round, but scored an escape to force the extra session.
Mabton's other placer at Othello last night was also in the 220-lb. bracket, where Carlos Rendon finished fourth for the Vikes after losing the third/fourth place match 7-6 to Isaiah Van of Wenatchee. Rendon trailed 7-0 after the first two rounds, before rallying and falling just short in the final round.
Mabton returns to action next Thursday, Dec. 29, at the Freeman Invitational, located just south of Spokane.
