Criminal charges detailed by WSP on local fatality

The Washington State Patrol has released a list of the charges that it is seeking against the motorist they believe caused the death of a 20-year-old Sunnyside man early this past Sunday morning.

Killed in the mishap was Nicholas Alfredo Marez, one of six passengers in the car. Also sustaining injuries in the one-vehicle rollover accident, which occurred at about 3:30 a.m. last Sunday morning, were a 21-year-old Sunnyside man, Ivan Chiprez, and four teenage girls, all from Sunnyside. Chiprez suffered serious enough injuries that he had to be transported to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center. The four teenage girls were all treated at Lower Valley hospitals.

WSP troopers said the driver of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu that rolled on East Factory Road, about four miles from Sunnyside early last Sunday, fled the scene of the accident. He was later identified as 21-year-old Jose Javier Peralta-Martinez of Toppenish.

He has since been taken into custody. The WSP has asked that Peralta-Martinez be formally charged with one count of felony hit-and-run involving a death, one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault.
