Sunnyside Community Hospital will begin providing birthing classes for expectant mothers and their coaches on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012.
The classes are free for those who will deliver their babies at the hospital's birthing center.
Cheryl Schrieber said it is recommended that all expectant mothers register for classes in the third trimester of their pregnancy.
"They want to finish classes about a month before their due date," she said.
Birthing classes provide the expectant mothers with information about different medications available during labor, the basics of breastfeeding and information regarding possible warning signs for premature labor.
"We give them information on what to expect during labor," said Schrieber, noting the expectant mothers and coaches will also learn breathing techniques, relaxation, massage and other comfort measures that can help during the labor process.
In addition, those participating in the birthing classes are provided a tour of Sunnyside Community Hospital's obstetrics department.
Schrieber said the classes are intended to reassure the expectant mothers to ease them during the important process of giving birth.
All classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., and are in two 2-hour sessions. They are scheduled for Jan. 10 & 12; February 21 & 23; March 13 & 15; April 10 & 12; May 8 & 10; June 12 & 14; July 10 & 12; August 14 & 16; September 11 & 13; October 9 & 11; November 13 & 15; and December 11 & 13.
