Sunnyside Lady Grizzlies accomplish rare feat

The Sunnyside Lady Grizzly basketball team topped its win total for all of last season with victories this past Friday and Saturday to improve to 3-2 on the young season. On Friday, Sunnyside used a 16-0 first-quarter run to whip visiting Moses Lake 59-39. The Lady Grizzlies backed that up with a 61-57 win at Davis on Saturday. Sunnyside built a 15-point lead after three quarters before the host Pirates rallied to tie the game in the final minutes. Coach Rick Puente said a combination of a full court defense by his team, as well as six clutch free throws by the Lady Grizzlies, helped turn the tide in the final moments. Freshman Jordan Rodriguez (pictured pushing the ball up court against Moses Lake) paced Sunnyside to the sweep with 41 points in the two games combined. Another Sunnyside freshman, Natalia Bazan, had 29 points in the two games. Puente said the weekend sweep was the first for Sunnyside's girls in several years and the first time the squad had ever beaten Moses Lake's varsity. The Lady Grizzlies open league play at Southridge this coming Friday, then host Kennewick on Saturday. "We appreciate the community, the parents and the student body rallying behind the girls," Puente said of the surging SHS girls program.
