Jose Jesus "Jesse" Flores, 89, of Sunnyside passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at his home. God bless you Jesse.
He was born Jan. 8, 1922 in Mission, Texas.
Jesse worked for Puterbaugh Farms in Mabton for 45 years and was considered part of the family. Before coming to Mabton, Jesse worked in Chicago with a Japanese landscaping company. Then he came out west with the railroad, stopping in Idaho to work in the potato harvest, done all by hand. He also worked in Portland in the floral business for a time as well as working in hops for Shinn & Sons on the Satus. He worked in hops for Golden Gate Farms and processing hops for S.S. Steiner, double compressing bales in the winter.
Finally, Jesse ended up working with Noel Charvet in the Mabton area and had been working for three generations with the Charvet and Puterbaugh families.
Jesse was a kind gentle soul and a man of many talents; he could whistle beautifully and play the saxophone very well. Jesse would often whistle while he worked out in the hops. He loved his animals and also his work.
In his later years, you could always find him busy doing whatever he could do-working in the flowers or trees, raking leaves, checking the pumpkin patches or stopping by to chat over a cup of coffee.
He always had a smile on his face and a funny story to tell. He will be greatly missed by "his family" of co-workers.
He is survived by his two daughters, Ovilia Bahranipoor and Susie Garza, both of Texas; one son, Roman Flores of Texas; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Natalia R. Flores.
