Something has happened on our stretch of I-82 where suddenly there is so much litter or trash on the side and in the meridian from Grandview to Wapato. Unfortunately the part near Sunnyside is horrible.
I called DOT out of Toppenish and spoke with someone named Keith. He informed me that my concerns are one of many and that there is nothing that can be done at this time. It was caused when they cut the weeds, cutting up the trash as well, and exposing it. He also said that there are no clubs or groups that have "adopted" a section of freeway here. As well he said the Department of Corrections will not be putting crews out to pick up garbage until spring.
I am truly just shocked and in disbelief that there is so much trash to begin with. WHO is throwing their junk out of their windows? What on earth possesses someone to throw their trash out the car windows, or let it fly out of their pickup trucks or Semi's? Why are we allowing that to happen? Aren't there fines for throwing out garbage? Aren't we enforcing them anymore? It is deplorable, absolutely shameful. It's not only on the freeway but in our town streets, and our country roads as well. We are America. We are not a country where there are no rules, no garbage trucks or sewers. We have places to put our trash, and its not out our windows!
I'm willing to do my part. If it starts here then let's get some of our groups, school groups to get together and clean up the roads. DOT will provide the bags and pick them up. Let's bring back the beauty this farming community can provide. Just call Keith at the Toppenish DOT. He can fill you in.
