ELLENSBURG - Grandview High School's Martin Torres is heading to the 2A State wrestling tournament in Tacoma this weekend after placing fourth in the 285-lb. weight class at the Regional meet in Ellensburg.
Torres made it into the semi-final round by pinning Brenden Berala from East Valley Yakima in 3:19. Torres was then pinned himself in the semi-final round by Shawn Burton from Deer Park High School in 1:56.
Torres moved on to the consolation round where he earned a spot in the consolation finals by pinning Drew Renollet of Prosser. He went on to lose by fall to Aaron Christiansen of East Valley Spokane in two minutes.
"Of the four qualifiers for State at 285, Martin is by far the smallest of the group," Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny said of Torres. "He weighs in at around 224 lbs. The top three all come in somewhere around 280."
Three Grandview wrestlers earned fifth place honors and a spot as an alternate at the State wrestling tournament this coming weekend.
Fidel Medina (103 lbs.) wrestled and lost his semi-final match to Omar Gomez of Wapato 13-10.
"Fidel gave up eight points in the second period before mounting a comeback that came up just short," said Sevigny.
In the consolation round, Medina lost to Gabe Martinez of Quincy 8-3. He moved on to win by injury default over Selah's Kyle Anson to earn the alternate spot.
In the 125-lb. weight class, Angel Abarca earned his alternate spot after losing to Irving Jaimez of Prosser by a pin. Abarca won his next two matches in the consolation bracket before being defeated by Nick Sweeney of East Valley Spokane 11-2.
In his final match, Abarca won by forfeit over Cristian Molina of East Valley Yakima.
Grandview's Adam Morales earned a spot as an alternate in the 189-lb. weight class. He dropped into the consolation round after making it to the semi-final round where he faced Alberto Vargas from Othello and wrestled into overtime.
"Vargas scored an escape in the final seven seconds of the ultimate tie breaker round to win the match 3-2," said Coach Sevigny.
In the consolation round, Morales lost to Raul Pech of Toppenish 3-1 before earning his alternate spot by winning his final match against Thomas Morgan of West Valley Spokane 4-3 in overtime.
Grandview's Marco Gonzales (130 lbs.) placed sixth in the Regional tournament after losing the alternate qualifying round to Alex Rockstrom of East Valley Spokane.
"For the most part, the kids wrestled well," said Coach Sevigny. "We are a little disappointed that we didn't qualify a few more wrestlers for the State tournament. Our region is the toughest in the state and it's very difficult to get kids through."
He continued, "Now we are focused on getting Martin (Torres) ready for this weekend and hopefully getting him into the medal rounds at State.
