Catch-and-release of sturgeon allowed

Fishermen seeking the thrill of catching a sturgeon can rejoice because catch-and-release fishing will still be allowed between the Bonneville and the Dalles dams on the Columbia River and its tributaries, Saturday, Feb. 19, through Dec. 21, 2011.

The sport fishery, however, will be closed for retention of sturgeon.

Fish managers estimate the harvest guideline of 2,000 fish will be reached by this coming Friday, Feb. 18.

The Dalles Dam and McNary Dam remain open to sturgeon retention until harvest guidelines are met.

The spawning sanctuaries for sturgeon from Highway 395/I-82 bridge upstream to McNary Dam and from the Rufus grain elevator upstream to John Day Dam will also be closed to all surgeon fishing May 1 through July 31.
