Torres wrestles tough in two State tourney matches

Martin Torres attempts to hook and flip Garret Pankuk in his first match at the State 2A Wrestling Tournament held in Tacoma this past weekend.

TACOMA - Grandview High School's Martin Torres represented the Greyhounds at the State 2A Wrestling Tournament this past weekend, but despite his determination and two hard fought matches, Torres was eliminated early.

Torres first wrestled Garret Pankuk from Centralia in the 285-lb. weight class. He drove Pankuk into triple overtime after a 1-1 tie in regulation. Neither wrestler scored in the first overtime, then Torres and Pankuk upped the score to 2-2 in the second overtime. But after a close battle Pankuk moved ahead and finished with a 6-2 victory.

Pankuk went on to place sixth at the tournament. Shawn Burton from Deer Park placed first.

After moving into the consolation round, Torres was eliminated from the competition after being defeated by Jack Newhouse from Steilacoom. In the final 30 seconds, Torres went for a takedown, but Newhouse evaded him and scored his own takedown to finish with a 5-2 victory over Torres.

"Martin (Torres) wrestled really well," said Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny. "It was a really close match all the way through."

Torres, a junior at Grandview High School, is already planning a return to State next year.
