Sunnyside police discover guns during traffic stop

Sunnyside Police Officer Jaime Prieto was on patrol yesterday (Monday) at about 2:30 p.m. when he recognized the driver of a vehicle traveling eastbound on North Avenue. He recalled the 17-year-old driver had a suspended driver's license.

As a result of his knowledge, Prieto initiated a traffic stop and contacted the five occupants of the vehicle.

Because the driver was operating the vehicle on a suspended license, Prieto began taking inventory while preparing to have the vehicle impounded, when he located a .40 caliber Glock handgun.

The officer, say police, discontinued the inventory and obtained a search warrant for the remainder of the vehicle. The search warrant was secured and a second gun, a .45 caliber sub-compact Glock handgun, was discovered inside the vehicle.

The larger caliber weapon, say police, was reported stolen in Kitsap County.

The 17-year-old driver and Heriberto Maya, 18, were taken into custody. Both face requested charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.
