Kathryn Dolores Shirk, 87, a former Mabton resident, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at Wesley Homes Care Center in Des Moines.

She was born Jan. 28, 1923 in Yakima to George and Kathryn Skidmore.

She received her education in the Mabton School District and graduated with the Mabton High School class of 1941.

On Jan. 1, 1941 she married Earl Shirk in Mabton. Kathryn was an amazing wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed being a Cub Scout leader and Campfire Bluebird Girls eader.

She also owned her own ceramic business and was the bookkeeper for Shirk's Machinery and Garage.

Kathryn enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping.

She was an active, baptized member of the former Mabton Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her son, Larry David (Rita) Shirk of Normandy Park; her sons-in-law, Kenneth Harker Sr. and Lyle Hardin; six grandchildren, Linnea (Jeremy) Roy, Dionna (Christian) Baggaley, Leilani (Rich) Hardin Matthes, Todd Hardin, Kathryn (Stuart) Harker Tillman and Kenneth E. (Jennifer) Harker Jr.; eight great- grandchildren, Asher Stevens Baggaley, Addison Rae Baggaley, Taitlynn Sienna Baggaley, Hayden Dean Roy, Hattie Marie Roy, Ryan Reid Tillman, Josh Combel and Katie Matthes; her two brothers, John Skidmore of Prosser and Loren (Marilyn) Skidmore of Dupont; and one sister, Lois Skidmore McQueen of Mabton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Kathryn; her husband, Earl Leslie Shirk; two daughters, Erma Louise Shirk Harker and Donna Jean Shirk Hardin; and two brothers, Lloyd Skidmore and Robert Skidmore. Viewing and visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at 10 a.m., at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Mabton Cemetery.
