Grandview wrestlers heating up

GRANDVIEW - The Greyhounds have been busy. Grandview's wrestlers came out on top of their Prosser opponents on Friday, Jan. 7, before putting in a strong showing at the 14th annual Grandview Winter Classic on Saturday.

Grandview wrestlers earned 42 points in their Friday match against Prosser. The opposing team walked away with 18 points.

Grandview wrestlers scoring victories against Prosser included David Castaneda, Eduardo Alcantar, Enrique Ochoa, Martin Torres, Fidel Medina, Stevie Rodriguez and Alex Soberanes.

Castaneda (135 lbs.) pinned his Prosser opponent, Brandon Macias, in 2:41.

Alcantar (140 lbs.) defeated Job Yepez 10-8 in double overtime.

Prosser's Benji Velasquez was also defeated 8-7 in double overtime by Ochoa (160 lbs.)

Torres (285 lbs.) pinned his opponent, Drew Renollet in 2:44.

Medina, Rodriguez and Soberanes all won by forfeit.

The Greyhounds took their momentum into the following day, where the Grandview wrestlers fought hard and walked away with second place honors.

Kiona-Benton earned top honors with 183.5 points, Grandview followed with 152. Washougal (145), West Valley (134), Riverview (79), Henry Foss (73), Prosser (72) and Hanford (41) also participated in the 14th annual Grandview Winter Classic on Saturday.

Earning first place honors for the Grandview team at the tourney were Adam Morales (215 lbs.) and Martin Torres (285 lbs.). Both wrestlers pinned their opponents in the finals for the win. Morales pinned Robert Koch of West Valley in 3:10, while Torres pinned Kyle Hall of Riverview in 56 seconds.

Earning second place honors were Fidel Medina, Marco Gonzalez and Enrique Ochoa. Each wrestler was defeated in the championship finals.

Medina lost 12-4 against Henry Foss's Andrew Hahn; Gonzalez was defeated by Kiona-Benton's Matt McCallum 7-2; Ochoa found himself pinned by John Barrette of Washougal in 1:31.

Several Grandview wrestlers went on to the consultation finals and went away with top honors there.

Stevie Rodriguez (112 lbs.) defeated Lane Bruland from West Valley 2-0; Alex Soberanes (125 lbs.) pinned Nick Burton of Henry Foss in 4:53; Jose Castilleja (130 lbs.) defeated Montie Miller from Washougal 3-0; Joesiah Saunders (135 lbs.) defeated Sheridan McDonald from Kiona-Benton 10-8; Mario Preito (145 lbs.) defeated Alonzo Mendoza of Riverview 12-10 in overtime; and Raul Gamboa (152 lbs.) defeated Jared Wilson of West Valley 8-6.
