Grandview misses tourney championship by half point

TACOMA - Grandview joined wrestlers from 12 other schools for the sixth annual Willie C. Stewart Invitational at Henry Foss High School this past weekend and proved the Greyhounds are a force to be reckoned with.

Grandview came in second in team scoring, coming in behind W.F. West High School from Chehalis. W.F. West earned 156.5 points to Grandview's 156.

Coming in behind the two teams were Henry Foss (110), Monroe High School (102), Bellarmine Preparatory School (100.5), Shorewood High School (96.5), Kent-Meridian High School (91), West Valley High School (68), Redmond High School (48), Clover Park High School (34), River Ridge High School (25), Tacoma Baptist High School (22) and Cascade High School (17).

Grandview advanced six wrestlers to the individual championship finals and two wrestlers, Marco Gonzalez and Adam Morales, walked away with top honors.

Gonzalez earned his championship win in the 130-lb. weight class against David Ladenburg from Bellarmine in a 12-4 decision.

Morales pinned his Monroe opponent, Tanner Mills, in 56 seconds for his 215-lb. weight class win.

The Greyhounds had four wrestlers earn second place finishes.

Andrew Hahn from Henry Foss defeated Grandview's Fidel Medina in the 103-lb. weight class championship finals, 13-9.

Grandview's Joesiah Saunders (135 lbs.) was defeated by Kyle Floresca from Shorewood, 12-8.

Mario Prieto (145 lbs.) lost to W.F. West's Andrew White after White pinned him in 2:42.

Finally, Raul Gamboa (152 lbs.) was pinned by Taylor Ladenburg from Bellarmine in 2:52.

In the consolation finals Davis Castaneda of Grandview defeated Ty Burk from W.F. West, 11-8, to earn third place honors in the 125-lb. weight class. Martin Torres (285 lbs.) also walked away in 3rd place after defeating Konner Wayson from River Ridge, 8-7.

Stevie Rodriguez of Grandview (112 lbs.) lost his consolation finals against Henry Foss's Luis Comello in a 15-2 decision.

The Greyhounds will return to the wrestling mats to improve their standing this Tuesday, Jan. 18, in a home match against Ephrata.
