MABTON - The Mabton wrestling team lost two contests last night against the Zillah Leopards and the Granger Spartans in a double-dual.
The two losses even Mabton's league record at 3-3.
The Vikings competed against the Leopards in the first competition of the evening. Zillah, which ended up prevailing by a 60-13 score, got off to a quick start when Jesse Gonzalez (112 lbs.) pinned Mabton's Jerry Quesada in 3:32 and then received a forfeit in the 119-lb. weight class.
Vicente Mireles (125 lbs.) put Mabton on the scoreboard when he pinned Julio Alonso in 1:58. With the score 12-6 in Zillah's favor the Leopards reeled off three straight wins to start the rout.
Cortes Hernandez (130 lbs.) pinned Mabton's Damian Diaz in 2:54. The Vikings then had to forfeit the 135-lb. match and Brandon Marquez lost to Zillah's Sergio Sanchez (140 lbs.) by an 8-4 score.
The Vikings struck back. Fabian Ruiz (145 lbs.) used seven takedowns to out-point Zillah's Christian Francisco 18-6. Emilio Mireles (152 lbs.) then beat Zillah's Rodney Treece 10-8 in overtime for the Vikings' last win against Zillah.
In the 160-lb. bout, three-time State champion Chris Castillo pinned Mabton's Mario Cardenas in 12 seconds. Carlos Rendon (189 lbs.) was pinned by Zillah's Kyle Kluever in 1:23 and Eric Huesca (285 lbs.) lost to Zillah's Josh Aho 3-0. Mabton gave up forfeits in the 171-lb. and 103-lb. matches.
In the second wrestling match of the night for Mabton the Vikings lost 57-19 to Granger.
Mabton gave up forfeits in the 103-lb., 119-lb., 135-lb. and 171-lb. weight classes.
In the 125-lb. match Mireles lost in triple overtime to Granger's Jonathan Salcedo, 7-6.
Mabton Coach John Kilian said this was a positive because Salcedo was third at State last season.
"Vicente is wrestling well," Kilian said.
Mireles was down 6-1 in the third round but used a takedown and a three-point near fall to tie things up at the end.
Diaz (135 lbs.) was then pinned by Granger's Adrian Guerrero in 52 seconds.
In the 140-lb. match Marquez beat Granger's Chris DeLeon 5-4 for Mabton's first win against the Spartans. Ruiz (145 lbs.) improved his record to 17-3 on the season when he beat Granger's Ernesto Martinez 10-1.
Mabton's Emilio Mireles (152 lbs.) stayed undefeated on the season at 4-0 with a pin against Abel Morales in 5:05. Cardenas (161 lbs.) then received a forfeit from Granger.
The Spartans then reeled off four straight pins. Rendon (189 lbs.) was pinned by Granger's Eli Galeno in 3:39; Ralph Martinez (215 lbs.) was pinned by Granger's Abidan Duarte in 1:36; Huesca (285 lbs.) was pinned by Granger's Pete Almaguer in 1:10; and Quesada (119 lbs.) was pinned by Granger's Josh Salcedo in 1:00.
Mabton (4-6) will host the Mabton Mid-Valley Classic on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m.
