ROYAL CITY - The Mabton Lady Viking basketball team won easily last night, Tuesday, with an 80-19 victory over host Royal.
Mabton led 21-4 after one quarter and 39-10 at the half.
"We quit pressing two minutes into the game," said Mabton Coach Chris McCallum.
He said that all of Mabton's players saw significant action as the game was in hand early.
The Lady Vikings opened a 62-18 lead after three quarters, before ending the game with an 18-1 run in the fourth quarter.
McCallum said his squad wasn't trying to run it up on the Knights, rather running the shot clock down on every single possession.
In the second half, the play clock kept running through all stoppages in play due to the lopsided score.
While not wanting to run up the score, McCallum was pleased to see his team finish the game strong. "We didn't want to lose our focus," he said.
That's because in some games this season, Mabton has struggled to finish after building an early lead.
Melissa Gutierrez had 23 points and eight steals to lead Mabton.
Veronica Vasquez and Jazzee Sustaita each tallied 19 points for the Lady Vikings. Vasquez had eight rebounds, while Sustaita had six steals.
Crysta Reynolds recorded a triple-double for Mabton with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.
Mabton (6-3, 9-8) now sits in third place in the SCAC East, and is hoping for a strong finish heading into the league tourney.
Mabton hosts Kiona-Benton this Friday.
