Our legislators, primarily from the west side, do not believe that our gang problem is bad enough to pass tougher legislation. I wonder how bad it needs to get. They say they are concerned about racial profiling. How do they handle that in Mexico?
If you are old enough you can remember when we not only didn't lock everything, but stealing was regarded as a crime.
I have for years advocated what I consider the greatest deterrent for people who have no respect for our laws, and that is to immediately impound vehicles that are being driven without a license and without insurance. After checking with the Valley's cities and Yakima County and finding that we have more than $29 million in fines that are classified as not collectable, we need to do something different.
I recently found that the city of Dallas, Texas passed an ordinance, that if you are pulled over by law enforcement and are not able to provide proof of insurance your car will be immediately impounded. In order to retrieve it you must show proof of insurance, the cost of towing ($350 and $20 per day impound. It is working in Dallas without discriminating.
Is this solution too simple, or does it not cost the taxpayers enough money?
