GRANDVIEW - A call about domestic violence in the 900 block of West Fourth Street helped Grandview police uncover a case of alleged child abuse.
Officers fielded the call on Wednesday of this week and went to the scene, where they met Robert Alexander, 32, and his girlfriend, Cynthia Jasso, 41.
Police say the couple was with a 5-year-old boy who had "very visible and substantial bruising on the right side of his face" and that a closer examination revealed numerous cuts and bruises over his entire body.
Police also noted the boy had a ruptured blood vessel in his left eye, as well as bruising and a scabbed over cut in the corner of that eye.
In a prepared statement, the Grandview Police Department said the boy also had bruises and cuts on his forehead and lips, dried blood in his ears and oozing sores behind his ears, a large yellowish bruise in the middle of his back and swollen, scratched and bruised legs.
Police say the boy is Alexander's nephew and had been in his and Jasso's care since May of this year.
The couple blamed the boy's injuries on falling down a lot and playing with a puppy, Grandview police reported.
Officers arrested Alexander and Jasso and booked them into the Grandview jail before transporting them to Yakima County jail on investigation of child abuse and mistreatment. Bail was set at $25,000 each. The couple's names were identified by the Yakima County prosecutor's office.
Police note the boy was taken into protective custody and a CAT scan revealed bleeding in his brain. The couple has two biological children, and neither show signs of any injuries, officers reported.
