Mabton teen hurt in rollover on I-82 Monday

18-year-old Banesa Y. Cardenas of Mabton sustained injuries yesterday as the result of a one-vehicle rollover accident on I-82, about one-tenth of a mile east of exit 69, just outside of Sunnyside.

Washington State Patrol troopers report that Cardenas was eastbound on I-82 at about 1:55 p.m. on Monday, July 4, in a 2000 Hyundai Sonata four-door sedan. The WSP said Cardenas was in the right lane and attempted to pass a vehicle that was traveling in the left lane.

Cardenas, say troopers, had to swerve to avoid the vehicle she was attempting to pass and ended up rolling her Hyundai Sonata, which was totaled.

The official cause of the accident has been listed by the WSP as unsafe passing on the part of Cardenas.

The young Mabton woman, whom troopers report was wearing a safety restraint, was rushed to Sunnyside Community Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

The use of alcohol or drugs is not believed to have been a contributing factor.
