Broersma shatters four Sunnyside pool records

photo

Aysiah Garza churns through the water for the Sunnyside Sharks swim team in the 10&U butterfly.

If justice was to truly be served, a statue bearing the likeness of Marisa Broersma would be erected at the Sunnyside municipal pool.

The 17-year-old Lower Valley phenom, enroute to leading the Sunnyside Sharks to a somewhat easy and surprising 556-234 victory over the perennially tough Prosser Piranhas, shattered four Sunnyside pool records last night.

One of the girls 18&U records that Broersma broke had stood for more than a decade. Broersma, in the 50-meter freestyle sprint, raced the length of the Olympic-size pool in a time of 30.53 seconds. The previous best clocking for that age division was 30.62 seconds, set in 1997 by Wapato's Erin Brandt.

Broersma completely demolished the pool record, ironically set by a fellow family member just two years ago, Kaitlyn Broersma, in the 200-meter individual medley. The old mark was 2:52.28, but last night the new record-holder touched the finishing wall a full 3.61 seconds ahead of that time, recording a clocking of 2:48.67.

The first of the four records that fell Tuesday evening came in the girls 18&U, 50-meter butterfly. Broersma's time was exactly one second quicker than the old record-setting pace of 33.61 seconds, established by Betheny Gurtisen of Prosser in 2003.

Broersma's 50-meter backstroke time last night also will go into the record books. She swam the length of the pool in 35.77 seconds, approximately three-tenths of a second quicker than the previous best clocking of 36.05 seconds, set by Hanna Rankin in 2009.

Although Broersma didn't establish a pool record in the one other girls 18&U race staged last night, the 50-meter breaststroke, she did handily win the sprint. She clocked a winning time of 39.12 seconds, more than six seconds ahead of the next closest finisher, but only about a second and a half off the pool record set three years ago.

Sunnyside's Ashlee Maldonado also turned in a whale of a performance last night, winning four of the five individual girls 10&U events. Maldonado's unbeaten string in 2011 came to an end, however, when teammate Janessa Frank edged her by seven one-hundredths of a second in the 50-meter breaststroke.

Maldonado was her usual dominating self, though, in the 50-meter butterfly and 200-meter IM. In the 'fly, as she has done all season, Maldonado crushed the competition by speeding the length of the pool in a time of 42.17 seconds. The next best clocking was far back at 50.95 seconds. In the longer 200-meter IM, Maldonado was even a greater threat with which to be reckoned. She toured the pool four times in a time of 3:54.76. The second-place clocking was 4:42.29.

Prosser's top standout Tuesday evening proved to be boys 14&U swimmer Sam Kawakami. His main threat, Sunnyside's Alex Perez, had pretty much been having his way against his opponents in the five previous meets this season. Last night, though, Perez learned that Kawakami is the swimmer to beat once the league championships roll around the end of this month.

Kawakami and Perez staged a nip-and-tuck affair in their first encounter last night, the 50-meter 'fly. The Prosser standout edged Perez by just two-tenths of a second. In the 50-breast, the 50-back and the 50-free, Kawakami's margins of victory over Perez were nine-tenths of a second, 1.86 seconds and four-tenths of a second. In the longer 200-meter individual medley, Kawakami had a first-place clocking of 3:00.85 compared to the runner-up Perez's time of 3:03.43.

The race of the night that brought the crowd to its feet, because of the photo finish closeness of the sprint, came in the boys 10&U, 50-meter freestyle. Sunnyside teammates Clay Schilperoort and Parker Van de Graaf pushed one another to the very end. When the final times were announced, it was Schilperoort edging out his Shark buddy by just one, one-hundredth of a second.

Sunnyside, now 5-1 in Mid-Valley Summer Swim League competition, has a bye this coming Thursday. The Sharks are scheduled to travel to Grandview next Tuesday, July 12, to take on the Neptunes.
