Barracudas avenge early season defeat to G'view Neptunes

OTHELLO - Turn about is fair play, right?

So thought the Othello Barracudas, as they took advantage of swimming in their home pool last night and came away with a convincing 407-296 victory over the visiting Grandview Neptunes.

Thursday evening's win by Othello avenged a 502-286 loss to the Neptunes in the Grandview pool back in mid-June.

The Neptunes slipped to 2-5 in Mid-Valley Summer Swim League play with last night's defeat.

Despite 111 points separating the two clubs last night by the time the final tallies were added up, Grandview and Othello were actually matched up pretty well against one another. The host Barracudas nailed down 35 victories on the night, only five more wins than the visiting Neptunes' 30 first-place finishes.

Othello's standouts proved to be girls 8&U and 14&U competitors Molly Jensen and Tatum Sparks.

Jensen, competing in the mighty mite division, won all four of the 25-yard races at 8&U. The closest any swimmer came to her was in the butterfly, but even there she won handily, finishing 1.38 seconds ahead of the runner-up, teammate Ashley Krebs.

It was at girls 8&U that probably did in Grandview last night, as the Neptunes didn't garner a single team point in that age division. By sweeping all the first through fourth-place team points in that age bracket, Othello had a 52-0 advantage on the scoreboard. Grandview has only one 8&U girls swimmer on its team this summer, and she was unable to make the trip to Othello last night.

Sparks also proved her mettle last night in the girls 14&U races, sweeping to victory in all five events. Her margins of victory were even greater than the times Jensen posted against her competitors.

Othello, too, received a top-notch effort from girls 10&U swimmer Rosa Johnson, winner of the 50-yard breaststroke and backstroke events, as well as the 200-yard individual medley. Johnson's teammate, Shaya Parrish, won the two other girls 10&U races...the 50-yard butterfly and freestyle.

Grandview, likewise, had several swimmers who separated themselves from the pack. Most notable were Tawnya Francis, Micah Binfet, Nathaniel Gutierrez and Fabian Ruiz, each of whom grabbed wins in four of the five individual events in which they competed.

The only blemish for Francis, at girls 16&U, was a runner-up finish in the 50-yard backstroke, where she clocked a time of 40.50 seconds. Othello's Lindy Provost edged her for the win in a time of 39.25 seconds.

Binfet's four victories at boys 14&U came in the 50-yard 'fly, breast and free races, and in the 200-yard IM. In the 50-back, he settled for a third-place showing with a 42.91 clocking behind a pair of Othello swimmers who had times of 35.55 and 41.47.

Gutierrez, at boys 10&U, came out on top in the 50-'fly, back and free races, and in the 200-IM. In the 50-yard breaststroke, the runner-up Gutierrez was bested by Othello's Patrick Azevedo, who hit the finishing wall more than 13 seconds ahead of him.

Ruiz's four boys 16&U wins occurred in all four of the 50-yard races. Stroke judges DQ'd him in the longer 200-yard individual medley.

Grandview, too, received two-victory performances in the individual races from Taylor Ebbelaar at girls 12&U (back, free); Tavian Valenzuela at boys 12&U (breast, free); and from Daniel McGhan at boys 8&U (butterfly, breast).
